Anger Management – Here’s How You Can Tame The Mammoth

Anger is one of the most powerful emotions we humans are capable of experiencing. Getting angry is basically a response mechanism, which is triggered when you are provoked or when you feel threatened. The intensity of anger can vary from slight irritation or feeling of repulsion to extreme rage.

Is Anger a Negative Emotion?

People often feel more powerful and better equipped to deal with a threat when they are angry. This is not necessarily a negative emotion. Sometimes, you need to feel the emotion of anger in order to stand up for justice. It also motivates people to achieve something. For example, if a sportsperson uses his anger in order to motivate himself, he will do surprisingly well on the field. But if you don’t know how to control it, anger can lead you to the path of trouble. You start fighting for trivial causes. Criminals from all over the world have admitted that they conducted crimes like murder and rape in a fit of rage.

The problem is that when you are in rage, you act first and think later. You start uttering hurtful comments even to your family members or close friends, without really contemplating what you are saying. Thus, clearly, ‘being angry’ has more negatives attached to it than positives.

How to Deal with Anger

You can’t stop being angry, no one can! But you can learn how to deal with it. There are 3 ways to do that.

  • By Hiding It – You can try to hide your anger. Whenever you feel angry, lock your feelings deep down somewhere in your heart and say nothing. But this strategy is not recommended, since your health and mental well-being can start suffering because of the negative impact of anger.
  • By Expressing It – This approach treats anger like poison. If your body is under the influence of a poisonous substance, you need to get rid of it as soon as possible. Expressing your feelings helps you in getting rid of anger. Once you successfully remove all the negative emotions attached with anger from your body, you feel an aura of positivity around you.

Unfortunately, this theory is not supported by science. According to various studies, venting-out anger can cause a number of heart diseases. When you vent out your anger, you become aggressive and hurtful, which is not only bad for you, but for others as well. A better way to vent out anger is by indulging in a physical activity. You can go for a run or you can try sports like kick-boxing. But this strategy too has a couple of flaws.

When you are angry, your blood pressure and heart rate increases. Now, in a situation like this, if you indulge in a physical activity, your heart rate will further increase and not everyone can cope up with such intense experience. Your body can collapse due to such exertion.

  • By Getting Rid of It – This strategy works effectively since it cures the very root cause of the problem. The first two approaches had flaws because the person who is getting angry was unable to detach it from his body and soul. But if he succeeds in getting rid of anger, he won’t need to either hide it or vent it out. This can be done by training your mind, how to avoid getting provoked. You can try exercises like deep breathing or you can listen to soothing music. Whenever you feel angry, count from 1 to 100 and try to relax yourself.

Mental relaxation is also important. Don’t let your mind interpret people’s behavior or comments in a negative way. When a friend says something rude, try not to react. Sometimes putting yourself in other people’s shoes also helps. Maybe that friend is going through a rough phase these days, because of which he has started to react this way. You can also try to distract yourself by pursuing a hobby or passion.
